Kolb/Sabino Canyon Road Connection
Public Meeting Presentation: Thursday, September 10, 2009
The City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) is currently in Phase One of the proposed connection of Sabino Canyon Road with Kolb Road. The proposed Sabino Canyon Road will extend south from Tanque Verde Road, near the northern boundary of Morris K. Udall Regional Park, across the Pantano Wash to Kolb Road, approximately one-quarter mile north of Speedway Boulevard. This project is part of the $2.1 billion, 20-year Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan that was approved by voters in May 2006. Additional funding will be provided through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
During Phase One, the project team will focus on engaging the public to gather input. During this process, a Community Oversight Committee (COC) will be formed to guide project development. Information and applications were mailed to residents and businesses in the project area on Aug. 7, 2009.
Additionally, the project team has begun to gather data needed for the subsequent design phases. Surveyors have been in the project area and exploratory drilling has taken place at the landfill. Initial environmental data gathering has also taken place.
Improvements included in the RTA plan:
- Four-lane roadway
- Bike lanes
- Sidewalks
Schedule:
- Public meetings to begin early fall 2009
- Phase Two: Conceptual Design
- COC meetings to garner input from residents, businesses and park representatives
- Additional public meetings to present project information and gather input
- Ongoing neighborhood meetings
- Phase Three: Final Design
- Construction of this project is designated in the RTA plan to begin spring 2011
