Houghton Road/Old Vail Road Intersection Improvement Project Traffic Signal Work
Posted: 08/28/2009
On Monday, August 31, 2009, work crews will remove the existing traffic signals and activate new, temporary traffic signals at the Houghton Road and Old Vail Road intersection. This work is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and should be complete by noon.
During this work, officers from the Tucson Police Department will be stationed at the intersection to help direct traffic until the new traffic signals are activated.
In other work, the southbound Houghton Road dedicated right-turn lane to Old Vail Road is scheduled to close at about 6 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009. Motorists can continue to make right turns from Houghton Road to Old Vail Road from the existing through travel lane. The closure of the dedicated right turn lane will be in effect until the completion of the project in early 2010.
This improvement project is the first construction project on a major City of Tucson corridor funded under the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) that was approved by voters in May 2006. The project marks the second Houghton Road Corridor project under the RTA. While funded through the RTA, the project is being managed by the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT).
Improvements to the intersection include widening the existing intersection to accommodate the future widening of Houghton Road, constructing dedicated right turn lanes and dual left turn lanes, and upgrading the traffic signal.
Speed limit through the construction area has been reduced to 35 mph for the remainder of the project.
The traveling public can expect delays when driving or bicycling in this work area. Please obey all traffic control signs and police officers, and watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.
