TDOT News Release

Houghton Road: Irvington Road To Valencia Road Final Design Open House

Posted: 08/25/2009

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) have scheduled an informational open house to seek additional input for the final design and construction of roadway improvements for Houghton Road from Irvington Road to Valencia Road.

Wednesday, August 26, 2009
6:00 to 7:30 p.m. – Presentation at 6:30 p.m.
Desert Sky Middle School in Rita Ranch
9850 E. Rankin Loop

You are invited to attend a public meeting to view the plans for the project area, meet the designers and discuss any issues of interest or concern. Representatives from TDOT will also be present to provide information. Maps and displays will be available for viewing, and the public will be encouraged to complete and submit comment forms.

As one of the projects identified by the voter-approved $2.1 billion RTA plan, Houghton Road will be widened to a multilane divided facility between Tanque Verde Road and Interstate 10. Proposed improvements for Houghton Road between Irvington Road and Valencia Road include widening of the roadway to a six-lane section with bike lanes and pedestrian facilities, “Florida T” signalization added at Poorman and Drexel Roads to facilitate access and comply with Houghton Road Corridor signalization spacing requirements (a “Florida T” signal at a T-shaped intersection allows for left- and right turns while through-traffic continues unimpeded), refinement of the drainage design concept at Poorman Road to avoid ponding, a retaining wall at a key location to keep the roadway footprint within the public right-of-way, emergency-vehicle signal provided for Tucson Fire Department station at Seven Generations Way and development of the final configuration of the intersection at Irvington Road, which will require widening Irvington Road approximately 1,700 feet to the west and 500 feet to the east at that intersection.

More information on Houghton Road improvements is posted at http://www.houghtonroad.info. For information on the RTA, visit http://www.rtamobility.com.
