TDOT News Release
Speedway Boulevard/Main Avenue Intersection Improvement Microsurfacing
Posted: 08/17/2009
On Monday, August 17, 2009 and Tuesday, August 18, 2009, crews will be microsurfacing the Speedway Boulevard and Main Avenue intersection and approaches. There will be intermittent lane closures at and before the intersection. During the work, at least one lane of travel in each direction will be maintained.
Work hours will be 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., each day. The travel restrictions will be in place throughout the duration of this work. Microsurfacing is a restorative surface treatment that is designed to increase surface friction, thereby increasing driving safety and reducing hydroplaning, while prolonging the life of the treated roadway. It creates a new, stable surface that is resistant to rutting in the summer and cracking in the winter.
Crews from K E & G Construction, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation, began work in early July 2009 to improve the Speedway Boulevard and Main Avenue intersection. The work involves widening the eastside of Main Avenue between Helen Street and Speedway Boulevard to accommodate dual southbound left turn lanes. Improvements also include new underground drainage facilities, new water lines, new sidewalks, new street lights, and new traffic signals. The project is scheduled to be complete in early September 2009.
The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling or walking in this work area. Business access will be maintained. For your safety, please observe all traffic control signage, message boards, and obey reduced speed limits. Watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.
