TDOT News Release

Speedway Boulevard/Main Avenue Intersection Improvement Traffic Signal Work

Posted: 07/20/2009

On Thursday, July 23, 2009, work crews making improvements to the Speedway Boulevard and Main Avenue intersection will remove the existing traffic signals and poles at the northeast corner of the intersection and install new traffic signals at that location. Crews will also install a new traffic signal controller box and rewire the entire intersection.

The work will begin at 5 a.m. and is scheduled to be complete by 6 p.m. This work will require workers to power down the electrical system at the intersection. Therefore, officers from the Tucson Police Department will be stationed at the intersection to help direct traffic until the traffic signals are activated.

Crews from K E & G Construction, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation, began work in early July 2009 to improve the Speedway Boulevard and Main Avenue intersection. The work will consist of widening the eastside of Main Avenue between Helen Street and Speedway Boulevard to accommodate dual southbound left turn lanes. Improvements also include new underground drainage facilities, new water lines, new sidewalks, new street lights, and new traffic signals. The project is scheduled to be complete in early September 2009.

The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling or walking in this work area. Business access will be maintained. For your safety, please observe all traffic control signage, message boards, and obey reduced speed limits. Watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.
