TDOT News Release
Houghton Road/Old Vail Road Improvement Begins
Posted: 06/12/2009
On Monday, June 15, 2009, crews will begin work to improve the Houghton Road and Old Vail Road/Mary Ann Cleveland Way intersection. The improvement project is the first construction project on a major City of Tucson corridor funded under the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) that was approved by voters in May 2006. The project marks the second Houghton Road Corridor project under the RTA. While funded through the RTA, the project is being managed by the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT).
Improvements to the intersection include widening the existing intersection to accommodate the future widening of Houghton Road, constructing dedicated right turn lanes and dual left turn lanes, and upgrading the traffic signal. Work hours for the project will be 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The project is scheduled to be complete in January 2010.
During the first week of the project, crews will focus their work on the roadway shoulders. No travel restrictions are anticipated during the first week of construction. When construction begins on the roadway, traffic will be shifted to accommodate the intersection widening and the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph.
