Fourth Avenue Underpass Construction Alert

This is a continuing series of construction alerts that will be issued throughout the construction of the Fourth Avenue Underpass Improvement Project. These alerts will announce construction, detour and closure information as it affects traffic. Motorists are asked to obey all posted speed limit signs within the construction area and be alert for construction crews and personnel working in the area.

PLEASE NOTE: OTHER DOWNTOWN CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY UNRELATED TO THE FOURTH AVENUE UNDERPASS PROJECT MAY ALSO AFFECT TRAFFIC.


On Monday, June 15, 2009 and Tuesday, June 16, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the following travel restrictions will be in place to allow the contractor to complete overhead utility work in the area.

  • The right lane of westbound Congress between the South Toole Avenue turn-off and Herbert Avenue will be closed. Access to both South Toole and North Toole Avenues will be maintained.
  • The left lane of eastbound Broadway, between Fifth Avenue and Fourth Avenue will be closed. No left turn movements permitted.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009 and Thursday, June18, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, the following travel restrictions will be in place to allow the contractor to complete overhead utility work in the area.

  • The left lane of westbound Congress will be closed between Herbert and Fifth Avenue. No turning or intersection restrictions will be in place due to this construction activity.
  • Southbound traffic on Fifth Avenue, between Broadway and Congress, will be shifted to the center lane. All turning movements will be maintained.

Access to businesses will be maintained at all times. In the event of mechanical failure or inclement weather, the above schedule is subject to change. Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians: Please be cautious, obey all posted construction signage, reduce speed limits and remember to share the road
