TDOT News Release
Houghton Road Groundbreaking Event June 4
Posted: 06/01/2009
Old Vail Road-Mary Ann Cleveland Way Intersection Improvements Set to Begin
The Houghton Road corridor is one of several major streets that will be reconstructed through the voter-approved, $2.1 billion, 20-year Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan. After years of planning and public outreach, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the RTA are pleased to announce the groundbreaking for the first City improvement project associated with Houghton Road, and the second project under the RTA.
A groundbreaking event open to the public will be held at:
Houghton Road/Old Vail Road-Mary Ann Cleveland Way Intersection (Southwest corner)
9 a.m., Thursday, June 4, 2009
Ward IV Tucson City Council Member Shirley Scott, and officials from the RTA and TDOT will attend the event. Details of the project will be provided, and the construction team will be present. Light refreshments will be available.
Houghton Road will be widened to a multilane divided facility between Tanque Verde Road and Interstate 10. The work on this intersection – which includes reconstructing, widening, upgrading signals and adding turn lanes – represents the first of 11 improvement projects within the Houghton Road Implementation Plan 2009-2019. The intersection improvements are scheduled for completion in late 2009 or early 2010.
More information on Houghton Road improvements is posted at http://www.houghtonroad.info. For information on the RTA, visit http://www.rtamobility.com.
While funded through the RTA, the project is being managed by TDOT. Voters approved the RTA in May 2006.
