TDOT News Release
Sixth Avenue Sidewalk Improvement Project
Posted: 03/26/2009
Travel restrictions will be in place on Sixth Avenue and Toole Avenue downtown beginning on Monday, March 30, 2009, as crews from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation Streets and Traffic Maintenance Division begin a sidewalk improvement project on Sixth Avenue from Toole Avenue downtown to Drachman Street.
During the three-month-long project, crews will install new sidewalks, driveways and access ramps at various locations on the east side and the west side of Sixth Avenue. Crews will also remove and replace non-compliant Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) driveways and access ramps.
In non residential locations, work will begin at 5:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Work in residential locations will be from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
During this work in the downtown area, northbound Sixth Avenue at Alameda Street will be reduced to one through travel lane at the underpass, left turns from eastbound Toole Avenue to northbound Sixth Avenue, and left turns from westbound Toole Avenue to westbound Alameda will be prohibited. These travel restrictions will be in place during work hours only.
During the first phase of the project, crews will be working on the west side of Sixth Avenue, working north towards Drachman Street. When crews reach Drachman Street, they will begin work on the east side of Sixth Avenue and work south to Toole Avenue. To insure the safety of the traveling public and work crews, travel lanes adjacent to where the crews are working will be restricted.
The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling or walking in this work area. Business access will be maintained. For your safety, please observe all traffic control signage, message boards, and obey reduced speed limits. Watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.
