Current Improvement Projects
Barraza Aviation, Downtown Section, 4th Avenue Underpass (Construction Manager @ Risk)
The 4th Avenue underpass project will provide a new east side “gateway” to the City center. This $26.4 million dollar project, being constructed by Sundt Construction Inc., started construction in June 2007 and is anticipated to be completed by June 2009. Columbus Wash Phase II Improvements (Construction Manager @ Risk)
The Columbus Wash project consists of installing an underground drainage system generally from Grant Road to Pima Street, along Ralph Avenue, Seneca Street, Pima Street and Belvedere Avenue. The work includes pavement and curb replacement, water and sewer modifications and other incidental work needed to complete this project. The Contractor for this project is Granite Construction Company, and the construction cost is $9.4 million. Construction is anticipated to start in April 2007 and be completed in April 2008.
Euclid/Park Avenue Bicycle-Pedestrian Overpass
The construction of a 240-foot bicycle/pedestrian overpass structure (bridge) over Euclid Avenue just north of State Route-210 - Aviation Parkway is now complete. The project now connects the existing bike path at the Park Avenue/14th Street cul-de-sac to the existing bike path west of Euclid Avenue, which connects to the existing Diamondback Bridge over Broadway Boulevard. This project included retaining walls, SOUND walls, artwork, pathway and bridge lighting, landscaping and irrigation. The contractor, Granite Construction, will now maintain the landscaping on this project through December 2009.
Highland Ave., Sixth Street to Arroyo Chico Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements - Rebid
This project consisted of installing new sidewalks, driveways, curb access ramps, striping, speed-tables, street lighting, landscaping and irrigation and other related items along Highland Avenue. This $1.3 million dollar project is Federal Highway Administration funded. The contractor, NAC Construction, has now completed construction and will maintain the landscaping through August 2009.
Harrison Road, Speedway Blvd. to Old Spanish Trail Paving Improvement
This Federal Highway Administration funded project involved the widening of Harrison Road, from south of Speedway Blvd. to just north of Old Spanish Trail. This full roadway improvement included water line and sanitary sewer modifications, upgrading the underground storm sewer drainage systems and will include new curbs, sidewalks, street lights, traffic signals and landscaping, similar to the Harrison Road project to the south that was completed in the summer of 2004. The contractor for this project is Granite Construction Company. The bid price for the project was $15 million. Construction is now complete and the contractor will maintain the landscaping on the project through January 2010. Additional information on this project can be found at the link provided above.
Job Order Contracts
The Department of Transportation uses various Job Order Contracts available for City Departments to use. They include landscape contractors, maintenance contractors and roadway construction contractors for various small projects. Detail on the roadway construction contractors and their work can be found on the “Currently Active Projects” report at the top of this page. Julian Wash Cultural Historic Walk Landscape Project
This ADOT sponsored project involved the restoration of a portion of the old Interstate 10 and Interstate 19 interchange into a historic park. The work consisted of constructing a 12 foot wide asphaltic concrete multi-use path, an 8 foot wide stabilized decomposed granite interpretive path with educational signs and displays, ramadas, benches, trash receptacles, bike racks, decorative concrete header, decorative concrete sidewalk, seeding, landscaping and irrigation. West Point Contractors was awarded the contract with a $709,000 bid. Work began in March 2007 and the contractor will maintain the landscaping on this project through September 2008.
Oracle/Main/Drachman Intersection Improvements
This regional transportation funded project consists of reconfiguring the Oracle Road, Main Avenue and Drachman Street intersection from its loop configuration, with lane channelizations, to that of a conventional “T” intersection with new traffic signals. Drachman Street received a 1-1/2" mill and overlay from the reconstruction of the intersection eastward approximately 1,200 feet towards Stone Avenue. New storm drain systems with curb inlets were constructed along Drachman Street and Oracle Road as well as new sidewalks, landscaping/irrigation, street lighting, sidewalks, curb access ramps, and water mains. The contractor, Southern Arizona Paving and Construction, has completed construction and will maintain the landscaping during the landscape establishment period through January 2010.
RTA Funded Projects
Construction is currently underway or will be underway shortly with the RTA funded Sidewalk improvements. ADA Accessibility Projects include improvements to Golf Links, Craycroft Road to Wilmot Road and Silverbell Rd., Speedway Blvd. to St. Mary’s. Construction will be performed by various job order contractors.
